Research News | Announcement! The Key Laboratory of Polar Environmental Stereo Observation and Application of the Ministry of Education was approved for construction!
Recently, the Ministry of Education issued a notice that the Key Laboratory of the Ministry of Education for Stereo Observation and Application of Polar Environment, with Sun Yat-Sen University as the supporting unit, has been approved for construction.
The Key Laboratory of Polar Environment Stereoscopic Observation and Application of the Ministry of Education (hereinafter referred to as the laboratory) is led by our institute, based on the disciplines of remote sensing science and technology, ocean engineering and technology, atmospheric science and marine science, and jointly declared the construction with the School of Ocean Engineering and Technology, the School of Atmospheric Science and the School of Geographical Science and Planning.
The laboratory focuses on the international frontier field of rapid change of polar environment, and deploys three key research directions: polar air-sky remote sensing observation technology, polar ocean stereo observation technology, and polar environment cognition and application, with Prof. Cheng Xiao, Prof. Li Chenglin (Vice Dean of College of Ocean Engineering and Technology) and Prof. Ke Fan (College of Atmospheric Sciences) as the academic leaders respectively. On the basis of multidisciplinary cross-fertilization, the laboratory has developed polar air-sky-ice-sea three-dimensional observation technology, carried out research on the mechanism of material loss of polar ice cap and the mechanism of rapid sea ice change, and committed to improve the overall knowledge of the mechanism of rapid polar environment change and its response to global climate change.

The laboratory relies on the university-level physical research platform, the Polar Research Center of Sun Yat-Sen University, and Professor Cheng Xiao is the director of the laboratory. In the past three years, the institute has focused on the development of polar and ocean remote sensing direction, continuously strengthened the construction of scientific research platform, and achieved a series of innovative achievements. More than 100 scientific papers have been published in high level journals such as Science Bulletin, Remote Sensing of Environment, the Cryosphere, Earth System Science Data, etc. Three monographs of polar series have been published, and the scientific research results support the National Remote Sensing Center of Ministry of Science and Technology's Global Ecological and Environmental Remote Sensing Annual Report. The research results support the "Annual Report on Global Ecological Remote Sensing Monitoring" of the National Remote Sensing Center of the Ministry of Science and Technology and all the polar series reports (2020 and 2022), and the initial construction of the "Ship-Satellite-Field-Center" with "Zhong Shan Da Xue Ji Di", "Ice Road Satellite", "Greenland Authenticity Test Site" and "Polar Remote Sensing Data Center". "The four-in-one polar conditions platform guarantee system.
